Wet, soft ground under a slab is what lets concrete settle and crack, so the base and the drainage carry even more weight than usual. We compact the subgrade, set the grade so water sheds off, and add drains where the site needs them to move water away from the slab and the foundation. On older properties, where concrete has already been through years of that wet ground, we often repair and resurface what is sound rather than tear out concrete that still has a good base under it.
